The mission of the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IOPAN) is to conduct marine environmental research to deepen the understanding of its phenomena and processes. Research conducted in the Baltic Sea and the European Arctic currently focuses on four strategic areas: The role of the ocean in shaping climate and the effects of climate change in European seas, Natural and anthropogenic variability of the Baltic Sea environment, Contemporary changes in ecosystems along the shores of shelf seas, Genetic and physiological mechanisms of marine organisms’ functioning, foundations of marine biotechnology. The Institute is a partner in projects implemented within the framework of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). IOPAN also publishes the scientific journal Oceanologia. This is an open access journal, meaning that all content is freely available to the user or their institution. Users have the right to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or author. This aligns with the definition of open access by the Budapest Open Access Initiative.
